Water soluble CBD is changing the cannbis industry
The world of cannabis is changing and people are now more aware of CBD oil benefits. But what is water soluble CBD?
CBD oils used to be the most popular method of taking CBD, and whilst this method is easy and works fine for many people. Others find they aren’t achieving the results they feel they should be, one explanation may be that their bodies aren’t absorbing enough of the cannabidiol to have the desired effect. There are now many more ways to take your CBD. Edibles are one popular option, along with CBD-infused drinks such as CBD tea and coffee. Experts believe that the CBD beverage market alone could be around $260 million by 2022, leading to increased demand for water-soluble CBD.
We all know that oil and water do not mix. This has led to the development of a water soluble CBD option. Flavoured CBD tinctures are popular because they work so quickly and effectively. By dropping the CBD oil under your tongue for 2 minutes, it is absorbed by the mucous membranes of the mouth, where it then makes its way into the bloodstream. This method is called sublingually (rather than just swallowing it) and it allows a quick delivery method and it doesn’t have to pass through the digestive tract and liver before reaching the bloodstream.
First Pass Metabolism
First-pass metabolism (also referred to as the first-pass effect) is a physiological phenomenon in the science of plant extract delivery. This is where the concentration of a compound is greatly reduced before it reaches the systemic circulation.
Reduced bioavailability is a relatively common problem that affects a huge range of compounds including, morphine, curcumin (from turmeric), lidocaine, nitroglycerin, and many found in the cannabis plant.
First-pass metabolism affects the bioavailability of CBD when consumed orally, there are some ways you can get around it, such as, rubbing CBD into your skin, dropping the oil under your tongue and allowing it to absorb, or using a vape pen. These methods will allow the CBD to directly enter the systemic circulation.
Why might water-soluble CBD be more effective?
One of the primary ways to overcome the first-pass effect is to convert the naturally oil-soluble CBD extract into a water-soluble form.
CBD oils are beneficial, however, our bodies are composed of roughly 60% water, which can make a huge difference in the bioavailability of many of the most popular CBD administration methods (tinctures, capsules, edibles, or drinks).
Bioavailability is defined as: “the degree and rate of which a substance (such as a drug) is absorbed into a living system or is made available at the site of interaction.”
Research shows that in cases of oral administration, the bioavailability of CBD could be as little as 4%, meaning that up to 96% of the CBD you initially took ends up being flushed from the body without offering any effect at all.
These low-bioavailability rates have led to the development of water-soluble CBD. As we know the body is more or less 60% water, it makes sense to have a CBD product that blends well with water, rather than working against it.
How is water-soluble CBD made?
Water-soluble CBD is made using a process known as nanotechnology. This process uses sound waves to create nanoparticles and requires a low amount of surfactants. The CBD clusters are broken down into micro-sized particles which are smaller than 100 nanometers. Once broken down into these tiny particles, the CBD now becomes compatible with water as it’s now small enough to dissolve and blend seamlessly with the water molecules. Additionally, these particles are translucent which means they can be added to drinks without being visually detected.
what are the benefits of water-soluble CBD?
Water-soluble CBD is simply more efficient and takes effect much quicker because they absorb more rapidly than other methods of delivery. If your body is absorbing more CBD, then you need to take less to reach the desired effects. You will also feel the effects of your dose within a few minutes, rather than waiting an hour for relief.
Water-soluble CBD is beneficial for several reasons, including:
- A higher concentration of bioavailability
- Increased convenience for taking CBD on-the-go and adding it to your own drinks such as coffee or even foods
Water soluble CBD can be easily added to your morning coffee
Supplementing your diet with a powerful plant extract like CBD can become a daily routine. As a species, we’ve lived for millions of years with the cannabis plant. But only recently has there been the discovery of the incredibly complex and important endocannabinoid system in our bodies that helps to regulate the function of our nervous and immune systems. Activating this system with CBD supplementation is something that we can all benefit from.
